A. Glikolisis
Jalur pertama dari metabolisme karbohidrat adalah glikolisis. Reaksi glikolisis berperan dalam memproduksi energi yang disebut Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) dari glukosa yang masuk ke dalam tubuh. Glikolisis terjadi di dalam sitosol pada semua sel, baik sel eukariotik maupun sel prokariotik.
Proses glikolisis dapat berlangsung dalam 2 kondisi, yaitu kondisi aerobik dan anaerobik. Reaksi glikolisis aerobik akan mengubah 1 molekul glukosa menjadi 2 molekul piruvat dan 2 molekul NADH oleh enzim sitosolik. NADH hasil glikolisis aerobik dioksidasi melalui rantai respirasi mitokondria dan menghasilkan 3 molekul ATP. Adapun NADH hasil glikolisis pada kondisi anaerobik akan dioksidasi kembali dalam konversi piruvat menjadi laktat oleh bantuan enzim laktat dehidrogenase. Sehingga, dapat disimpulkan bahwa energi yang dihasilkan dalam glikolisis anaerobik lebih rendah daripada glikolisis aerobik. Selain itu, hasil glikolisis aerobik berupa 2 piruvat dan 2 NADH sedangkan glikolisis anaerobik berupa laktat. Kemudian, bagaimana proses glikolisis dapat terjadi?

B. Siklus Asam Sitrat
Siklus asam sitrat (CAC) dikenal juga dengan siklus asam trikarboksilat (TCA) atau siklus Krebs merupakan siklus metabolisme utama yang menghubungkan antara metabolisme karbohidrat, lemak, dan protein. CAC terjadi di dalam matriks mitokondria pada sel eukariotik, sedangkan pada sel prokariotik terjadi di dalam sitosol. Bagaimana proses CAC terjadi?
